Abstract

In the Mexican state of Guerrero, poverty and lack of opportunities shape the daily life of the population. To be able to continue with their studies, many girls that live in this territory moved to another state so they could attend a religious boarding school. Then, in 2007, an outbreak of mass hysteria occurred at this educational institution. Based on testimonies of some of the girls that were affected by that specific context and by that distinct outbreak, I argue in this article that in the search for educative formation, girls and adolescents endured a war within their bodies, that alludes to the overlapping of gender oppression and ethnicity with the use and control of bodies in confinement.
