Abstract

Man prostitution has been poorly researched, specially in Latin America and most of the times, it has been analyzed from dehumanizing approaches where man prostitutes have been cataloged as social deviants, delinquents and disease carriers. This article analyzes Brazilian man prostitutes, known as miches, with an aprroach to sex as work. I think the economic structure is relevant for the gender and race systems construction. Since the Brazilian different economic systems have been determining for the formation of sexual identities, the study considers Brazil history back from the colonial times to the present. However, I use the concept ‘agency’ to analyze these man prostitutes in order to understand the way their feelings and individual decisions are linked to the social structure in Brazil.
