Abstract

The objective of this article is to establish the need to create an area of study within Mexican social anthropology that would strengthen and lend a solid academic presence to the current production of a body of research and data regarding sexual diversity. Fi rst and foremost, the Anglo-European experience of anthropological approaches in lesbian-gay studies should be reprised. Second, it is proposed that an area of research called "studies of sexual diversity" be created in order to recupérate certain tenets of feminism, gender studies, lesbian-gay studies, queer theory studies and the British view of the sociology of sexuality. Third, the lack of recognition regarding sexual diversity as an anthropological dimension of cultural difference is revealed, as well as the lack of existing local studies on this subject among those who review national research tendencies. Fourth, the subject matter of known published studies is identified and described in detail. Finally, certain considerations are presented regarding the need to provide institutional support for national anthropological studies regarding sexual diversity so as to achieve full academic status.
