El avance del patrimonio hacia una culminación de procesos de pensamiento y enfoques metodológicos de los que disponemos hasta la fecha es elocuente. En gran medida, el desarrollo del patrimonio se ha visto influido por la disciplina arqueológica, de la que tanto se ha apropiado y que tenía tendencia a considerar el pasado como algo “ajeno”, en contraposición a una “herencia”. Por lo tanto, a estas alturas es probablemente correcto que tengamos filosofías diversas sobre lo que debe valorarse como patrimonio. Deberíamos debatir y escribir libremente sobre si existe un equilibrio (si todos tenemos voz) en nuestra representación del patrimonio. En las últimas décadas hemos asistido a debates pragmáticos sobre la naturaleza del patrimonio como fenómeno geográfica y conceptualmente global. Por tanto, el patrimonio se ha definido de forma diferente y se ha redefinido, estructurado y reestructurado, conceptualizado y reconceptualizado continuamente. Esto ha dado lugar a una serie de nociones que influyen en la investigación, la conservación, el consumo y la presentación del patrimonio.
