Abstract

In this text, I aim to highlight the importance of subjective understanding of suffering as a fundamental tool to addressing experiences of adversity and pain, in contrast to the predominant biomedical approach. To this end, the narrative of suffering of experienced by a young purépecha named S is examined, with the purpose of understanding how suffering is constructed and manifested in different sociocultural dimensions, influencing decisions related to medical attention and treatment. Furthermore, there is a desire to delve into the explanatory framework and forms of expressing pain, demonstrating how the affected person experiences and perceives their condition, giving meaning to suffering as an inherent part of life, where it acquires meaning at both individual and collective levels within a particular context. Additionally, emphasis is placed on the close interrelationship between the body and emotions, as well as the relevance of the meaning of symptoms for both the individual and their environment, recognizing that suffering and pain are social interpretations.
