Abstract

For nuns in New Spain confession was a sacrament of great importance, because only through confession, through repentance for their evil thoughts and deeds, and the fulfillment of penance could they be absolved and receive communion. Thus, confessionals were considered sacred spaces. Little is known about these spaces in convent churches, but an Inquisition record provides information on their characteristics and the number that existed in some nunneries in the viceregal capital.
