Abstract

The text traces the relationship between archaeological sites and the mountain, considered
sacred among the indigenous communities of the Sierra Norte de Puebla. A study was
carried out of the distribution of four archaeological sites in two communities in the municipality
of Pahuatlán. The settlement pattern in the urban layout of modern-day communities is compared to ancient settlements and the sacred mountain as a point of convergence. Moreover, the text catalogues the rock paintings of Atla, which are in serious risk of disappearing due to increasing vandalism in the region. Finally, the close relationship between tangible and intangible cultural heritage is examined as it is expressed in indigenous communities through ritual manifestations that make up the landscape, which is considered sacred.
