Abstract

During two field seasons of the Rio Baluarte Archaeological Project, it conducted a
surface survey downstream of an area of almost 75 km2, where 108 archaeological sites were  recorded: 73 on the south bank of the river and 35 in the north shore. The vestiges range from
small fields of materials, the remains of isolated farmsteads, to an almost urban settlement, Chametla,
which extends over 100 hectares and has a large number of mounds, including pyramidal  structures and a ballgame court, which belies the assumption of the simple character of societies
that inhabited this part of pre-Hispanic Mexico.
