Abstract

The research focuses on exploring the intersection between psychological distress, sexual identity, and suicide risk among Maya adolescents in a specific community. A qualitative research design with semi-structured interviews was used to gain a deep understanding of the factors contributing to suicidal ideation and the coping resources used by the adolescents. The sample consisted of 17 Maya adolescents selected from a local health center database. The study’s findings revealed significant challenges for these adolescents, including cultural discrimination and stigma related to mental health, as well as social pressure and cultural expectations regarding gender roles. Additional- ly, experiences of trauma and adversity, coupled with lack of social and fam- ily support, contributed to the vulnerability of these adolescents. Adolescents also faced challenges regarding the acceptance of their sexual identity in a culturally conservative environment, limiting their access to specialized men- tal health services. However, coping strategies and resilience were identified, such as resorting to traditional healing practices and receiving support from close friendships or community leaders. These findings underscore the need for culturally sensitive and effective mental health policies and programs to address risk factors and promote resilience in Maya adolescents. By better understanding the experiences and needs of this population, efforts can be made to reduce disparities in mental health and promote emotional well-being in indigenous communities.
